If you’re a runner, you know the pain of buying a new pair of shoes that feel great in the store, only to realize 30 miles later that they’re not quite right. Maybe they start rubbing in weird spots. Maybe they don’t offer enough support. Or maybe they just don’t feel the same mid-stride as they did on that carpeted try-on area.
Normally, that’s just money down the drain. But if you’re an REI member, it doesn’t have to be.
The Return Policy That Makes Testing Shoes Way Less Risky
REI’s membership ($30 for a lifetime) comes with one benefit we think more runners should be taking advantage of: a 365-day return window—even on used gear.
That means if you’ve run in a pair of shoes a handful of times and they’re just not working out, you can bring them back. As long as they’re not totally trashed, REI will typically accept them—no judgment, no restocking fees, no hassle.

For runners who are experimenting with different brands, trying to find the right fit, or managing chronic issues like plantar fasciitis or shin splints, this return policy can be a game-changer. You essentially get a full year to test your gear in real conditions—not just take a few steps around the store.
Real Talk: We've Used It Ourselves
One of our editors decided to take up running, but was anxious about choosing a shoe due to past knee injuries. Joint pain isn’t something you can observe in-store, and takes several miles to diagnose.
So, rather than suffering through runs or having to pay another $200 for the right shoes, he bought the $30 REI lifetime membership. When his first pair of Hokas actually turned out to be too supportive, he was able to bring them back after a couple weeks of use. After explaining this to an employee, he received the same amount he had originally paid for the shoes in store credit, which was used to “buy” another pair.
In other words, as long as you have a valid reason for returning them (not enough support, blisters, etc.), the REI lifetime membership is a great way to test out new shoes and find what’s right for you.
Other Membership Perks
While the return policy alone justifies the $30 one-time fee in our opinion, there are other solid perks too:
- 10% back on eligible purchases each year through REI’s annual dividend
- Access to member-exclusive sales and coupons
- Special pricing on REI classes and events, which often include outdoor running clinics and trail running meetups
If you spend even a moderate amount on running gear each year, the membership quickly pays for itself!
Bottom Line
If you’re serious about running—or just trying to find shoes that won’t wreck your knees—the REI Co-op membership is an easy yes. For the price of a single race entry fee, you get a 365-day testing and return period for all new gear you buy—for the rest of your life.
You can become an REI member here.
Your feet will thank you.
