Pregnant or hoping to be? Then you know prenatal vitamins are essential. But you might be overwhelmed by the dozens of brands and recommendations out there.
We enlisted Elizabeth Cook (MS, RD, LDN), a Registered Dietitian who specializes in prenatal nutrition, to help us understand what to look for (and avoid) in a prenatal vitamin.
Together with hands-on reviews from TCJ staff, we tested three of the most popular prenatal brands: Needed, Perelel, and Ritual. Read on to find out the clear winner based on ingredients, quality, expertise, ease of intake, and value.
What to Look for in a Prenatal Supplement
Choosing the right supplement is important for your baby and you. Robust evidence shows prenatal supplements help reduce the risk of neural tube defects, support baby’s brain and cognitive development, reduce pregnancy symptoms, and even support postpartum recovery.¹* "In pregnancy, it’s almost impossible to get all the nutrients you need from a diet alone," says Cook. "Morning sickness and nausea also play an important role.”
Because the FDA regulates supplements differently than prescription medication, it’s critical to research prenatals before using. Look for brands that prioritize high-quality, proven ingredients and are developed with guidance from women's health specialists.

So how do Needed, Perelel, and Ritual compare?
Ingredients: Needed Wins with the Most Comprehensive Nutrient Profile
We evaluated the ingredient labels of all three brands to see how they compare on essential pregnancy vitamins and minerals:

Needed’s Prenatal Multi contains almost all of the essential vitamins, minerals, and trace nutrients required for pregnant women and their developing babies. Needed delivers significantly more nutrition than Ritual or Perelel,** while maintaining higher standards of quality and absorption. Needed also provides the highest dosages of individual nutrients like Choline, Magnesium, Selenium, Vitamins A and B6, and zinc and separates conflicting ingredients (calcium and iron) to maximize actual absorption. Needed conducted an IRB-approved clinical study of 235 pregnant women which found that women taking the Needed amounts of key nutrients showed significantly higher nutrient levels compared to women taking a standard prenatal vitamin.
- Choline & Magnesium: High doses of choline are important for fetal brain development, but hard to get from diet alone.2* Needed contains 200mg of choline, compared to 120mg for Perelel and just 55mg for Ritual. Needed also includes 125mg of magnesium to help regulate maternal nerve function and build baby's bones - a nutrient other brands underdose.3*
- Active B-Vitamins: Features methylated forms of Folate (920mcg DFE) and B12 (150mcg). Not everyone can absorb standard folic acid; the methylated versions in Needed "ensure adequacy in everyone," according to Cook.
- Essential Trace Minerals: Includes trace nutrients like selenium and chromium - key for maternal thyroid health, immune health, and blood glucose metabolism.*
- Optimized Absorption: Needed intentionally separates Iron from the core multi. “Iron and calcium compete for absorption,” warns Cook. Taking them separately improves absorption and minimizes potential nausea.4*
- Better Flexibility: Needed also separates Omega-3s as it may be more prone to oxidation when exposed to light, heat, oxygen, and other nutrients. Some pregnant women get sufficient Omega-3s from diet alone (two servings per week of fish5) but for those who need supplementation, Needed offers a standalone product that can be taken separately from the multi, allowing more flexibility.

Perelel’s Trimester Prenatal Packs come in second for ingredients. While Perelel adjusts nutrient levels by trimester, the actual quantities of key nutrients like Magnesium and Choline are significantly lower than Needed's for every trimester. There is also no research to support different nutrients and quantities by trimester6 - adding unnecessary confusion. Perelel also bundles iron and calcium in the same daily packet. This creates a direct biochemical conflict - iron and calcium compete for the same absorption pathways in the gut, meaning they block one another and significantly reduce the amount of nutrition your body can actually absorb.
Ritual’s Essential Prenatal ranks last due to its omission of vital ingredients. With just 12 ingredients compared to 22 in Needed, its formula is less comprehensive. According to Cook, Ritual “is likely to leave you with gaps in your nutrient intake which directly impacts baby’s growth.” Ritual completely omits essential nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Zinc, and Selenium, crucial for maternal immune health, thyroid function, and fetal organ development.*
Quality: It's a Tie!
We feel confident in the safety and transparency of Needed, Perelel, and Ritual. While the FDA regulates supplements differently than prescription medication, all three companies strictly adhere to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and hold the Clean Label Project Purity Award. All use independent third-party testing - which our dietitian notes is essential to "verify the label is telling the truth." Additionally, information regarding ingredient sourcing and supply chains are readily available on each brand's website.
Expertise: Needed Wins with an Extensive Expert Network
Ritual was started by a mother who was frustrated by the lack of transparency in mass-market vitamins.
Perelel was co-founded by two entrepreneurs and an OB/GYN looking to create a trimester-specific routine.
Needed was founded by two mothers and trained nutritionists and backed by a collaborative network of over 15,000 women’s health practitioners (OB/GYNs, Midwives, and Registered Dietitians) who contribute to product formulation decisions. They’ve also established Needed.® Labs™, which conducts IRB-approved*** clinical studies to ensure Needed's ingredients are absorbed effectively by the body and that dosing is optimized to meet women’s needs, unlike many vitamins which meet bare minimum nutrition requirements. That’s why we’re confident in Needed’s absorption and benefits.
Ease of Intake: Needed Wins with Low Capsule Count & Powder Option

Testers preferred Needed’s highly customizable, three-capsule routine. It delivers a comprehensive panel of essential nutrients and all three capsules are the exact same - making it easy to remember what to take. Our testers appreciated the citrus-scented inserts that neutralize vitamin odors, and Needed also offers a vanilla flavored powder format for those who struggle with capsules.
For those who need iron and Omega-3, we recommend taking these supplements at a separate time of day to minimize nausea and ensure maximum absorption of all nutrients.*

Ritual’s mint insert effectively hides the common “algae odor” from Omega-3 DHA. However, while the daily dose is only two capsules, Ritual's minimalist formula necessitates taking add-ons - like Choline, Magnesium, and Selenium - to fill in your nutritional gaps.
Perelel requires four to five pills a day (depending on trimester), conveniently grouped in daily sachets. While they are easy to grab, swallowing five pills at once can be tough - particularly during morning sickness - and our testers noticed “fishy” burps due to the bundled Omega-3s.

Value: Needed Wins with the Most Nutrition Per Dollar
Next, let’s compare the monthly costs of each brand.

Ritual is mid-pack on price at $39 per month, but its stripped-down formula contains significantly fewer nutrients than Perelel or Needed. Because it lacks essential elements like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Zinc, and Selenium, expecting mothers will need to purchase separate add-on supplements, which quickly pushes the actual monthly cost much higher.
Perelel’s trimester packs are the most expensive at $49.95 per month. While it delivers a more complete profile than Ritual, it still falls noticeably short of Needed’s clinical dosages for crucial nutrients like Choline, Magnesium, and Selenium.
Needed Prenatal Multi is $27.51/month with TCJ’s discount - or $34.39 without. That's the lowest base price of the three, and by far the highest nutrient density. Medical guidelines recommend daily iron for all pregnant women, and many also require additional Omega-3. With TCJ’s discount, Needed’s iron is just $14/month and their Omega-3 is $19.20/month.
The Verdict: Needed Is the Best Prenatal Supplement.
Needed is our pick for best prenatal supplement due to its comprehensive ingredient profile, high absorption, clinically studied dosing of key nutrients, and overall value.
"Needed products were formulated with the right nutrients at levels that make a true difference. It includes proper dosages of crucial nutrients that other prenatals miss, and that provides peace of mind for you and your baby.” said Elizabeth Cook, MS, RD, LDN, our prenatal nutrition expert.
